Dynamic and Engaging Learning Experiences

PS 452 is designed as a learning community in which children, families, and staff from diverse cultural, ethnic, linguistic, and economic backgrounds grow and work together.  We strive to support lifelong learners who are active, empathetic, and responsible citizens of a global community.  As we enter the second decade of the 21st century, we recognize the need to educate and prepare our students for the future.  We will do this while at the same time retaining the wonder, creativity and discovery that is paramount to elementary school education.

PS 452 will focus the educational experiences for children through content based-learning. Social Studies and Science inquiry will drive the curriculum.  Many opportunities to leave the classroom for exploratory purposes to museums, landmarks, parks, neighborhoods and cultural institutions; group projects that require the children to plan, research, organize and share; goal-oriented units that use technology, art, drama and movement to express ideas; assessments based on NY State Standards that will inform students what they know well and are able to do; and clear expectations so children are aware of the journey of each study. We plan to guide students to demonstrate learning with the types of products and performance that match our time.

In order to meet the needs of the whole child, PS 452 will incorporate social emotional learning as an explicit component of the school experience.  Using social emotional teaching and learning standards, such as those developed by the state of Illinois, we will make explicit social emotional learning an integral part of our learning day so that children possess the ability to recognize their emotions and resolve differences peaceably.  We will draw upon the work of Daniel Goleman and Linda Lantieri as our foundation.

In addition to our creative partnership with National Dance Institute, we are seeking partnerships with The American Museum of Natural History, The New York Historical Society, Carnegie Hall, NYC Chess, The Asia Society, and more!
